Femoral reconstruction can pose a particular challenge due to bone loss from previous surgery, infection, fractures and osteolysis.  One of the more commonly used classification systems for femoral bone loss is the Paprosky System:

This system dictates the types of prosthesis available to the surgeon for use in reconstruction.

We use a 'ladder' of reconstruction (shown opposite) on our courses as a guide to the options available to the surgeon to deal with different challenges intra-operatively.
