Corail Stem - this is an uncemented primary femoral stem with a hydroxyapatite coating.  It was possible to remove the old stem without having to perform an extended trochanteric osteotomy.

This anteroposterior radiograph of the patients pelvis demonstrates a left sided Corail stem in situ. Extensive surgery was not required reducing surgical morbidity.

Clinical Outcomes

  • This patient had a good functional outcome and did not require extensive surgery.

Learning Points

  • Sometimes is it possible to remove a well fixed femoral stem from the top with the use of flexible osteotomes, and use a primary implant thus reducing the surgical morbidity.
